Three young cousins (ages 8, 9 and 10) have discovered an old Indian carving buried in a cave near the Saint Croix River in Minnesota. While trying to find out more about the carving, they are mystically transported to a Dakota Indian Village in the year 1757.

They quickly realize that they must learn more about the carving so they can return home to their own time and their own families. The Dakota will not tell them anything about the carving (it is a Dakota Talisman) until the cousins each earn the trust of the village people.

To earn that trust, each cousin is given a Dakota task. One must learn about the medicine of the Standing People. Another must learn to hunt while honoring the hunted. The third will play lacrosse with the village for hunting rights to a big forest.
